The government says the Isle of Man can have up to three “next generation” mobile phone operators.
After 3G mobile broadband comes 4G – known as Long Term Evolution or LTE – and the Communications Commission has published the results of a consultation and decision it’s made on how to go about setting up such a network.
4G mobile data speeds are comparable to home broadband.
The commission says 4G operators will need a licence from the Isle of Man as well as one from Ofcom in the UK.
Applicants need to register with the commission by September 24, 2013 in order to bid for one of the three licences available.
Commission chairman Juan Watterson MHK says introducing 4G on the island quickly will bring a boost for businesses and consumers.
Companies who want to run a 4G network have to get their finished application in by October 10.
