Manx Youth Orchestra creates pep band

Funding provided by Manx Lottery Trust

The Manx Youth Orchestra will soon add a pep band to its repertoire thanks to a grant of almost £4,000 from the Manx Lottery Trust.

Pep bands, more commonly known as marching bands, have gained popularity among young musicians due to their energetic repertoire and are often seen at sports events to motivate participants and spectators.

In addition to acquiring new instruments the grant will facilitate access to specialised scores tailored for this format of band.

Chairman Alan Crebbin said: "Pep bands rely heavily on large percussion instruments, supported by extensive wind and brass sections. The capital outlay required to purchase such specialist equipment would be extensive, and something the Manx Youth Orchestra could not have asked of our students.

"We’re therefore thrilled to have received this grant from Manx Lottery Trust which will enable us to purchase the new instruments required to create our very own marching band and introduce a fresh and innovative ensemble style to our young musicians."

Stephen Turner, chairman of the Manx Lottery Trust, added: "The Manx Youth Orchestra has been committed to nurturing the musical endeavours of the Island’s younger generations for over half a century.

"The trust is therefore delighted to support the orchestra on their journey to creating a pep band for their younger musicians and we wish them every success with this new musical venture."

Founded in 1971 the Manx Youth Orchestra has been a vital platform for young musicians across the Isle of Man to explore orchestral music.

Every Saturday during term time more than 200 young musicians gather at St Ninian's Lower School to rehearse under the guidance of a professional team of tutors from the Isle of Man Music Service and the Island’s secondary schools.
