Four Isle of Man residents receive gift of Maundy money

Recipients honoured for 'faithful and outstanding Christian service to their local communities'

The King has awarded four people from the Isle of Man with the gift of Maundy money.

Maundy money is a tradition dating back to medieval times, and refers to a set of specially minted silver coins distributed by the British monarch to elderly citizens on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday.

The Diocese of Sodor and Man says Brian Kermode, Bruce Kirkham, Elizabeth Sheen and Edna Clarke have all been honoured today for their 'faithful and outstanding Christian service to their local communities'.

The four, who represent both the Anglican and Methodist churches of the Island, attended a special service at St Asaph Cathedral in Wales.

The Diocese says the gifting of Maundy money is reminiscent of the way Jesus Christ washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper.
