72-year-old cycling 172 miles for Breast Cancer Now

Gordon Drinkwater to ride from Whitehaven to South Shields

This week a 72-year-old retiree will be cycling 172 miles to raise funds for Manx charity Breast Cancer Now.

Gordon Drinkwater will be attempting to ride from Whitehaven to South Shields over three days, starting today (18 July).

He chose the charity as he lost his mum to breast cancer many years ago.

His wife, who was also diagnosed 18 years ago, is now doing well and enjoying life after treatment.

Last year Gordon, who started cycling as a way to keep fit during the Covid pandemic, raised £1,300 by cycling from Liverpool to Chester and back.

The Steam Packet is supporting Gordon's endeavours with travel to and from the Island as part of its Manx Community Assistance Scheme.

Next month he's planning to cycle from Chester to Hereford - approximately 100 miles - between two RAF bases where he was once stationed.
